The incoming president has floated numerous tariff plans. Retailers say their livelihood could depend on which ultimately come to fruition.

President-elect Donald Trump has said his tariffs will raise revenues, boost U.S. jobs, and help stop the drug trade. But some of these goals are at odds with the others.

A tariff is a tax on goods brought into the U.S. The tariffs collected by Customs and Border Protection agents are directed to the U.S. Treasury. The U.S. controls which countries and goods it imposes import tariffs on and what percentage it charges.
