NORFOLK, Va. — The Oscar Smith Tigers had one step remaining in their 2024 resurgence: beat James Madison and return the Class 6 State Title to Chesapeake for the first time since 2021. Down 14-7 in the 4th quarter, the Tigers marched 91 yards down the field, tying the game with a touchdown pass from Lonnie Andrews to Travis Johnson.

There was no shortage of late-game dramatics, but Oscar Smith held on to defeat James Madison 21-20 to win the Class 6 state championship Saturday. It’s the Tigers’ fifth state championship since 2008.

For the first time in program history, Maury has won consecutive Class 5 state championships. The Commodores (15-0) dominated Briar Woods (10-4) out of Ashburn 46-0 Saturday at Bridgeforth Stadium on the campus of James Madison University.

The Commodores complete their mission with a rout of Briar Woods of Ashburn. They finished 15-0 for the second straight season.
