After surviving one impeachment attempt, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's finally luck ran out when parliament voted to suspend his powers.

South Korean lawmakers are set to vote for a second time Saturday on whether to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed attempt to impose martial law.

Police estimated at least 200,000 people filled the streets of Seoul ahead of the vote. It was the motion to impeach Yoon over his failed attempt to impose martial law early last week.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol's switch from contrition to defiance on Thursday over his martial law order rallied some supporters but other members of his party said it did nothing to sway their view that he must be removed from office.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached Saturday over his short-lived martial law decree, with twelve lawmakers from his own party joining the opposition to pass the motion in the National Assembly.

Prosecutors have also accused Kim Yong Hyun, ousted defence minister, of advising the president to deploy troops to block parliamentary votes on the decree. Mr Kim, currently in custody, reportedly attempted to take his own life but was stabilised after intervention by detention centre officials.

The South Korean National Assembly voted on December 14 to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol after his attempt to impose martial law earlier this month. Several thousand Koreans cheered at a rally just outside the National Assembly.

The Constitutional Court will decide whether to remove Yoon sometime in the next six months. If he is removed from office, a snap election will be called.

K-pop fans, many of them young women, were especially visible at the party-like protests that preceded the South Korean president’s impeachment.
