While visiting the Back Bay area of Boston we learned a little about the history of Boston Common and that it’s the oldest city park in the US. We like Central Park and how it’s a quiet escape from … Full review by je1058

Lots going on at different times and very busy at weekends. Some people had music playing and there was a market on at one point. Plenty of grassy areas to sit and relax or just have a stroll around … Full review by tinylass
Just a comment to solve the mystery here. With my allergies, I am pretty sensitive to outdoor smells. I noticed the "pot" smell right away last week in Boston common. But being a gardener, I know what it really is, Boxwood. These are pretty little smooth leaf shrubs that come from England. Several types, the English train them into hedges. Boxwood has a smell that is very much like pot but worse, it is unpleasant. I looked around but there was so much to see that I could not locate where the boxwoods were. Must be a lot of them, especially near the Visitor Center. My Lowes store always has plenty of boxwood plants and that whole section of the greenhouse stinks. So, I can't really say what everyone in Boston Common is smoking, but I do know lots of boxwood shrubs when I smell them.

Thanks for the info from all of you. Good arguments, I agree, pot smell varies with the type. Not legal here but the kid next store sure likes his skunk weed. I only smelled this near that little visitor's center near the sidewalk and it distinctly had that awful boxwood smell (Thought they were trimming hedges) or something. For rest of Common, I can't say. I just walked in and out any number of times, so I might have missed the real pot that the rest of you smelled.
I am interested in running tomorrow morning around the Common and the garden. I'm planning to start around 5 am. Will I have a problem with safety at that time of the morning? Thanks

As in most good sized cities Boston has a homeless population, and in recent months they have sometimes harassed and even mugged people. The Boston Common is an area where many of the homeless go to use drugs/drink and sleep. Since few people are around at 5AM I would not run or walk there alone. The Esplanade along the Charles River, is close to Boston Common and more open, but here too women at least have been attacked (3 or 4 in two years). If I were to go running, I would choose the Esplanade, only between 8AM and 6 PM.
Hi, I am planning a surprise visit for my husband's birthday the last few days of November. Is the "scenic view" worth the extra expense or is the "forrest view" a great way to go? We like a nice view with a patio or balcony but don't want to upgrade all the way to the Ocean View. Any input is appreciated! Thank you, in advance.

Don't waste money on an upgrade. Get out and about and walk the common and Botanical Gardens far better than a view from a hotel room. Its a magical city with great views all over.
